Review
Team Fortress 2 is a team oriented first person shooter developed by Valve Software which was released for Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and PC back in 2007. But after its release on Steam, the PC version has been made free to play and is the only version Valve still work on to date.
The game revolves around the battle of two teams of mercenaries in 1960s America who have been hired by two rival brothers Redmond and Blutarch. These brothers are in a feud against each other fighting over the gravel mines their father left for them in his will.
The two teams consist of nine different classes who specialise in filling various roles in the team.
The Scout is the fastest, can double jump and excels in close to mid range combat.
The Soldier is a great all-rounder but has a very high skill ceiling due to his ability to "rocket jump" by jumping in mid air and firing rockets at his feet.
The Pyro specialises in close combat with his flame thrower. He can burst down players very well and also deny pushes or offensive manoeuvres by using his arblast ability to knock back players and reflect projectiles back at the enemy.
The Demoman can deal the highest damage output in the game with his grenade launcher and sticky bombs. He is able to lock down areas of the map with traps and take down sentry nests with ease. But if an enemy gets too close, the Demoman may find it hard to survive as his weapons require incredible aim and prediction and he may end up killing himself with his own explosives.
The Heavy is one of the most well known of the nine classes. This big russian man is an incredible tank and boasts the largest health pool in the game. He also wields a huge minigun which deals incredible damage at close to medium range. But he is incredibly slow which makes him an easy target for enemies at a distance.
The Engineer is built for defence. Whilst not a great class on his own, the engineer can build a variety of buildings to support his teammates in battle. He can build a sentry gun which is great at locking down areas and preventing the enemy from pushing too far forward. He can build a dispenser which supplies resources for him to build and repair his buildings with and even heals allies and refills their ammo. Finally, he can also build an entrance and exit teleporters which help respawning allies reach the front lines faster.
Next is the Sniper, this crazed Australian prefers to stay back and pick enemies of at a distance with his sniper rifle. A good sniper will be able to lock down entire areas of the map just by being present as they can pick off important classes with headshots and cause his enemies to be too afraid to enter his line of sight.
Then we have the Medic. Having a good medic on your team can win games as he is able to keep his allies alive using his ghostbuster-esque medi-gun and even increase his allies maximum health temporarily just by healing them. The medic is also incredibly useful when pushing or defending objectives as he possesses an ability called Ubercharge which builds up as he heals. Once the ubercharge reaches 100% the medic can right click to "pop" his Uber and provide 8 seconds of damage immunity to himself and the ally his medi-gun is currently attached to. This ability is requires lots of teamwork between the medic and his team, but if used correctly it will win them the game.
Finally, we have the spy. One of the most popular classes because of his unique play style. The Spy is able to go invisible for short periods of time and use his disguise kit to make himself look like an ally player to the enemy teammates. The Spy's signature weapon is his knife which allows the Spy to instantly kill an enemy if he attacks them from behind no matter how much health they have. This is a great way of picking of important classes whilst they are distracted and can turn an entire fight around.
The overall gameplay is very fast paced as there is constant action occurring on the battle field. The maps are designed with a balance of choke points, elevated platforms and open spaces which create a variance in gameplay as enemies could be high-up, low down or perhaps even behind the player. It also provides the player with many strategies to overcome certain obstacles the enemy may have set for the player whether it be a heavy medic combo or an annoyingly positioned sentry.
The player is also able to change classes on the fly. See a sentry nest that needs taking out but your team is full of pyros? Go spy or demo to solve the problem. Is everyone dying to fast? Go medic and start pushing. This feature allows the player to utilise the right class for the right situation as there are no class limits in regular play and lets the player play who they want to play.
Also, during playtime, the player may find new free unlock able weapons through random drops. These drops are not affected by skill or success in a match but will drop randomly when the player dies. These weapons will have special stats applied to them which can sometimes alter a class' play style. For instance, the gunslinger for the Engineer is a robotic hand which replaces his large sentry for a cheap to make fast building minisentry which cannot be upgraded. These mini-sentries make the engineer a much more offensive class and brings him out to the front lines. The Medic can have access to a new med-gun called a Kritz-krieg which acts just the same way as a normal med-gun but instead of providing invincibility on ubercharge it provides the patient a 100% critical hit buff which can wipe out the entire team in seconds if used well.
Micro transactions are also present in the game via the in game store. Here the player can buy cosmetic items and weapons using real money but almost everything in the store can also be acquired through trading with other players in the community.
The game was made using the Source engine which is an engine famous for its realistic physics and ability to run on low end computers. Team Fortress' aesthetic was designed to be cartoonish and was inspired by 20th century commercial drawings.
Team Fortress 2 is a great game that has endured the test of time and is still is played by millions of players around the world. I would recommend this game to those who are looking for a team based shooter experience which is easy to learn but hard to master and still has an active and passionate community behind it.
